In 1986, she caught her big break when a friend’s father introduced her to a manager at Elektra Records. Her self-titled debut album was released in 1988 and featured the popular single “Fast Car” which reached high chart positions in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Singer Chapman’s second studio album, “New Beginning,” released in 1995, also received significant acclaim. The musician has also released a handful of albums, including Telling Stories (2000), Our Bright Future (2008), and toured through 2009. In recent years, she has largely stayed out of the spotlight.

2023 CMA Award for “Fast Car”

When country musician Luke Combs recorded a cover version of “Fast Car” in April 2023, Chapman’s fame and attention surged once more. In less than two months, Combs’ rendition of the song amassed over 65 million Spotify plays and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Because of the cover, Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to receive a single songwriting credit on a No. 1 country hit.

More than 35 years after the original song’s debut, in November 2023, Singer-songwriter Chapman received a CMA Award for Song of the Year while Combs took home the Single of the Year honor.
