Who Was Syd Barrett?

Syd Barrett (1946-2006) was an important key figure in the history of rock music, singer, songwriter, and artist known for his role as a founding member of Pink Floyd. His innovative songwriting, experimental guitar playing, and charismatic stage presence contributed to Pink Floyd’s earlier success. After a mental break, he spent 30 years as a painter.

Early Life And Education

Roger Keith Barrett also known as Syd Barrett born in Cambridge, England on January 6th, 1946. He began to show a talent for music at an early age and played different instruments like piano, ukulele, banjo, and guitar. At school, Syd Barrett received recognition for being creative as well as winning poetry awards. While at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys, he made acquaintances with Roger Waters and David Gilmour who later became members of Pink Floyd.

English Singer Barrett started a number of ensembles in the early 1960s, singing and playing rhythm guitar During his teenage years, he formed “Geoff Mott and the Mottoes” band that eventually evolved into “The Pink Floyd Sound.” In 1962, Syd started performing Beatles covers at parties and picnics before moving to London in 1964 where he enrolled at Camberwell College of Arts majoring in painting.

Founder of Pink Floyd

One main achievement by Barrett was joining forces with former classmate Roger Waters in what would become a guitarist gig in Pink Floyd. During this time their first album came out titled “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (1967) however his behavior became increasingly erratic with many attributing it to a psychotic break potentially induced by LSD drug.

Decline And Departure

In 1968, Barrett was eventually asked to leave the band due to his mental health struggles. After leaving the band Pink Floyd; Madcap Laughs (1970), Barett (1970) were among others besides he only did one concert between 1968 and 1972 and later joined other groups like The Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band and Stars.

He recorded several songs in his honor in spite of him quitting music, for example “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd. In 1996 Syd Barrett was awarded to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of Pink Floyd but he didn’t attend the ceremony.

Later Years

In his later years, After moving back with his mother to Cambridge in 1978, Syd Barrett had retreated from society and lived mostly under wraps, often being seen largely by her sister Rosemary.

Personal Life

Syd Barrett dated many women during his life, including Libby Gausden, Jenny Spires, and Evelyn Rose. He never married or had children.


On July 7, 2006, he died from pancreatic cancer in Cambridge England at the age of sixty years old.
