Who Was Rachel Carson?

Rachel Carson was a famous marine biologist, environmentalist, and writer from America who is known for her informing the world about the dangers pesticides and fertilizers pose on the environment.

Early Life And Education

Rachel Carson was born on May 27, 1907, in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She grew up on a Pennsylvania farm, which gave her a lot of first-hand consciousness of nature and wildlife and alerted the world about the environmental impact of fertilizers and pesticides. Her passion started off with writing; however she graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women in 1929 before moving on to Johns Hopkins University for a master’s degree.

Rachel Carson Books

Five years of teaching at the University of Maryland later, Carson joined the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service in 1936. Under The Sea-Wind (1941), which is her first book, presents living things underwater in simple language devoid of jargon or technicalities.

Throughout the 1940s, she continued to work for the government, partly to provide for her mother and her sister’s two orphaned girls. Her first best-selling book, The Sea Around Us, released in 1951 relieved her of financial and money burdens.

Her influential book “Silent Spring” (1962) ignited a national environmental awareness campaign in America leading to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). She is also remembered as one early activist who wanted future generations to have an opportunity to see the world. Moreover, DDT and other toxic insecticides were banned partly due to Carson’s efforts.

Rachel Carson had no children nor did she ever get married.

Death

As soon as “Silent Spring” appeared in print two years after which she passed away on April 14th, 1964 from cancer and is reputed as one of those activists who tirelessly struggled to preserve the world for incoming generations.
