Early Life

Artist Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Málaga, Spain. His mother was Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez, his father’s name was Don José Ruiz Blasco, a great art painter and teacher. Artist Pablo Picasso showed remarkable drawing talent at an early age. His first words were “piz, piz,” a mispronunciation of “lápiz,” the Spanish word for pencil.

Early Education

Picasso’s father began teaching him how to paint and draw when he was young, but by the time he was 13, Picasso had outperformed him. He was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1895 at the age of 14, despite being younger than the average student, because of his exceptional entrance exam results. Picasso, however, frequently skipped class to explore Barcelona’s streets and draw the urban vistas he saw.

At the age of 91, Picasso died on April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France. He died of heart failure.
