Founding The Black Panther Party

The party was founded in reaction to the systematic racism and police violence that African Americans in the US had to endure. The Panthers fought for social programs to improve neighbourhoods and for African Americans’ right to self-defense against police brutality.

In 1968, African American Activist Seale decided that a public account of the formation of the Panthers was needed, so he wrote Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party With Huey P. Newton (published in 1970). That same year, Seale was taken into custody while demonstrating at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Legal Troubles And Later Years

While Bobby Seale was a member of the Black Panther Party, he ran into legal issues. He was accused of plotting to provoke disturbances in 1969 about demonstrations at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The judge in Seale’s highly contentious trial ordered that he be restrained and muzzled during the proceedings. Although Seale’s charges were eventually dropped, he still had legal issues in the following years.

Bobby Seale continued to be involved in social and political matters in subsequent years.
